Our European Hotels directory strives to keep our subscribers up to date with current trends and offers in but not only limited to Europe. We have recently partnered with Ashanti Lodge Travel in Cape Town to offer you the best advice on how to plan your safari in Cape Town. Get up close and personal with these curious and playful creatures. Experience an adventure while interacting with them in their own environment. Summer is here and it is the best time to go out and have fun in the ocean, as the seals are out in full force and they are most active during this time.
The Cape Fur Seal can be found around the South African Coast and they are unique in this area. They cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The only option is to pay a visit to Cape Town to experience this active underwater adventure. Hout Bay’s, Duiker Island is one of the best places to visit as it is home to a number of seals. The area is protected and falls under the Table Mountain National Park. When you visit, the seals are in their natural environment and will interact with any snorkeler or diver as they wish. This is what makes this experience so unique and popular, the seals are wild and free and you get to witness their playful antics in their own environment.
When is the best time to snorkel
The ideal time to snorkel is from September to May, but the best time is during mid-March and April. During this time you have your seal pups learning to swim and exploring their environment. The water in the area is very cold, so if you wish to have the water at its warmest then December to February is your best choice.
If you don’t wish to get wet there is always the option of watching from the boat and keeping dry, but what’s the fun in that? You must immerse yourself in the full experience to get the most enjoyment and fulfilment out. If you can’t get in the water for some reason, most companies will offer a reduced rate if you stay in the boat.
Do you need experience
Knowing how to swim is a good start and if you suffer bad motion sickness, this might not be a good experience for you. If you are still adamant on going on the trip then you can take a motion sickness pill the evening before and on the morning to help you out. Ashanti Travel Centre and Backpackers in Cape Town are an established and reliable source if you are wanting to plan the best safari in South Africa.
During your swim the ocean can be a bit choppy with small waves and the water is usually quite cold. The boat stays nearby so that if you need to get out and warm up, you can. This is why you should be able to swim quite confidently. Kids from 6 years of age to 16 can participate as long as there is an adult or guardian to supervise.
All equipment is provided and this includes:
- A wetsuit, gloves, mask and snorkel. The wetsuit is necessary because the water in the area is extremely cold.
- Seal guide and an educational information. Always interesting to learn something new.
- Snacks and some refreshments. Very much needed after your swim with the seals.
- Hot water so you can pour this over your wetsuit after the activity
- The boat ride is also included in the whole deal. This in itself is a great experience.
Start off the adventure with a short boat ride to the Island itself and get ready to slip into the water and enjoy an hour of swimming with the Seals. You can also sit back and watch the seals lazing in the sun on the rocks, just chilling. The round trip usually lasts for about three hours, so the there is plenty of time to soak up all the fun.
If you are planning a getaway to South Africa or if you live in Cape Town and have not been to snorkel with the seals, then the time is right for you to take hold of this exciting opportunity.
